All-Union Childcare Rally, Nov. 1st at Noon!
All-Union Childcare Rally, Nov. 1st at Noon!
We invite MSP members and our union siblings to join a rally and parade at UMass Amherst at noon on Friday, November 1st, as we call on administration to expand on-campus childcare for our students and unions! The rally begins at noon in front of the Student Union. Paid parking is available in the Campus Center garage nearby. We're taking advantage of the Halloween season -- so come in costume, come ready to dance, come ready to march on Whitmore! We're providing face painting and the incredible sound of the Expandable Brass Band!
Why? The campus unions at UMass Amherst have a coalitional proposal on the table to expand childcare access and affordability for students, graduate workers, staff, and librarians and faculty. We are negotiating for an infant room, operating hours that accommodate workers' schedules, and increased capacity. Right now, the wait list is a year and half long, which means that planning for childcare is extremely difficult. This is also an opportunity to uplift the struggles of other childcare workers in the area. As one organizer has put it, "We see this as a reproductive rights, family friendly, gender equity, and economic justice issue for UMass and our members, students and the community." Join us!
