The UMass Budget - and what you can do

Email date:

Description:
House Ways & Means budget cuts PHE by 13%

The budget proposed yesterday by the House Ways and Means Committee cuts support for public higher ed very significantly (about 13%).  This translates into a cut of about $35 million for this campus.

In response, PHENOM is sponsoring call-in days to State Representatives on many campuses around the state.  At UMass/Amherst, this is taking place Wed., April 21, from 10:45 to 2:00 in the Student Union Ballroom.  Bring your cell phone.  You’ll get a script, make your call, and get a cookie.  Please announce this in your classes if at all possible.

If you have a little time, please help staff this effort.  Please email Conner Ring at cring@student.umass.edu to sign up for one of these shifts:

10:45-11:35     11:30-12:15     12:15-1:15       1:00-2:00

You’ll get on-the-job training helping people identify their State Rep. and guide them through the process.

Just 30 seconds more…
PHENOM has also launched a long-term grassroots campaign “For a Great State of Mind” to convince every candidate in this year’s legislative and statewide elections to address the crisis in public higher education.  The MSP supports this campaign, and we urge you to sign a simple but powerful statement at http://www.votervoice.net/Core.aspx?AID=762&APP=Registration&

The statement reads:

Massachusetts must provide top-quality public higher education and must make it affordable for all. To these ends, the Commonwealth must ensure that per capita spending on public higher education is no less than the national average, and that student costs are no higher than the national average. Significant and measurable progress toward these benchmarks must be achieved by FY 2012.

Thank you for participating, and please forward.  You can get more information about PHENOM and this campaign at www.phenomonline.org
