Subject: [Allunit] Please Urge Your State Senator to Reject Unfair HealthInsurance Premiums
Dear MSP Members --
The campaign to increase the amount that state employees (including MSP members) pay for their health insurance premiums is now headed to the Massachusetts Senate and it is almost guaranteed that a proposal to increase the contribution that state employees pay for their health insurance will be part of the package. The Senate budget is scheduled to be released tomorrow and will be on the Senate floor next week so we are urging you to contact your Senator now about this issue.
The proposal -- voted by state representatives -- is for all current employees to pay 20 percent of their health insurance premium each month and for new hires (as of July 1, 2009) to pay 25 percent of their health insurance premiums. It's important to note that these new splits are significantly better than the initial proposal which called for all state employees to pay 30% for their health insurance premiums, but they still represent a pay cut for our members.
PLEASE reach out to your local senator and urge them to reject efforts to increase your health insurance contribution. It is imperative that they hear from you now before heading to the debate on the state budget. MTA makes it easy to send a message to your Senator. Just visit their ACTION ALERT webpage where you'll be able to use/modify a message which is then automatically sent to your local legislator.
Thanks! Randall Phillis MSP President
