Because the increased maximum comes in the middle of the plan year (which runs from January 1 through December 31), there may be some confusion about what expenses can/cannot be reimbursed at this point. Following are several examples to illustrate how the increased maximum will be applied:
Scenario 1) You have not utilized the dental plan in 2011. Effective 7/1/11 you have $1,200 remaining toward your 2011 calendar year maximum and effective 1/1/12 you will have a calendar year maximum of $1,200 for the 2012 plan year.
Scenario 2) You have utilized $500 toward your calendar year maximum prior to 7/1/11. Effective 7/1/11 you have $700 remaining toward your 2011 calendar year maximum and effective 1/1/12 you will have a calendar year maximum of $1,200 for the 2012 plan year.
Scenario 3) You have exceeded the $1,000 calendar year maximum prior to 7/1/11. Effective 7/1/11 you have $200 remaining toward your 2011 calendar year maximum. This amount can only be applied to services received after 7/1/11. Effective 1/1/12 you will have a calendar year maximum of $1,200 for the 2012 plan year.
