Email date: 03/03/2010 Description: Annual Elections for MTA Delegates & MSP Board It’s time to nominate MSP members to 1. Be a delegate to MTA’s Annual Meeting May 7-8 in Boston This year’s meeting is especially important since there are contested elections for MTA President (Paul Toner vs. Paul Phillips) and for the Higher Ed seat on the MTA Executive Committee (MSP’s own Max Page vs. Donnie McGee from Bristol Community College). The MTA’s role in the gubernatorial election will no doubt also be debated. MSP is allotted 24 delegates; they will be elected at MSP’s General Assembly on April 16. We encourage delegates to attend both Friday and Saturday. It is especially important to be there Saturday. Starting at 8, the Higher Ed delegates caucus to discuss critical issues, which looks to be largely around contract funding. During the day, important business and position votes are taken, and voting for MTA officers takes place. We usually go out to dinner Friday night with our colleagues from UMass Boston. MSP will pay for the cost of hotel and mileage (we encourage carpooling). It’s a fascinating experience participating in a 1,000 person democratic discussion and decision-making about important issues. Please RSVP if you would like to be nominated. 2. Serve on MSP’s Executive Board An even more fascinating and informative experience is available locally. Because terms of service rotate, there are slots available for MSP officers, who serve for two-year terms, and board members for three-year terms. These positions provide a chance to learn about important UMass concerns and MSP actions. A list of candidates will be presented at MSP’s General Assembly on April 16; further nominations will be solicited at that meeting; and then elections will be held in the MSP office a week later. The Board is the decision-making body of the union. Meetings are held every two weeks, generally for an hour and a quarter. Officers meet separately during alternate weeks. Please speak with any of the current members (see list attached) for a better sense of what’s involved, and RSVP if you are interested in nominating someone (including yourself). Positions to be filled this year are: Officer Seats President 3 Vice President seats Secretary Board Seats Library Seat 3 CONS Seats 2 SBS Seats SOM Seat 2 HFA Seats Nursing Seat
