Worklife talks scheduled for Tuesday, 3/23/10 (1:30 p.m./CC 917) & Wednesday, 3/24/10 (12 noon/CC 904-908)


Last year, many MSP faculty and librarians took part in a survey and focus groups meant to identify work-life concerns. We are now finally ready to share the results of those studies, and - with the support of many others on campus - are bringing in Mary Ann Mason to give a talk about families and academic careers on March 23. In addition, major findings from the study of UMass faculty will be shared in a talk on March 24. Please check the website (see announcement below) for more information about the research findings, and come to both talks to learn more about these issues.

Do Babies Matter in Academia?

 

Mary Ann Mason , who is known as the architect of the  University of California "Family-Friendly Edge,"  will visit campus to speak about how having children affects academic careers, and how to best address these effects. She has engineered a set of programs that has been emulated by both private and public universities to facilitate work-life balance. During her visit, she will meet with faculty and administrators and give a public talk to discuss her work.

Work-Life at UMass Amherst

 

Jennifer Lundquist and Joya Misra will be presenting their research findings. During 2008-2009, they conducted a survey and a series of focus groups with faculty and librarians on work-life balance; they have since written a series of reports with a number of research assistants that address workload and work-life balance, the use of university benefits, email and work-life balance, the geography of work, and the gendered barriers to advancement for associate professors.

This event has been supported by a number of sources, including  the UMass Amherst Office of Faculty Development's Mutual Mentoring Initiative, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Chancellor Robert Holub, The Massachusetts Society of Professors, Dean of the College of Natural Sciences Steve Goodwin, the Sociology department, the UMass Center for Research on Families, the Women Gender Sexuality Studies Program, and Mount Holyoke College.
