Description:
The measure passes (453 for/295 opposed)

The results of the MSP vote on the administration’s Exceptional Merit Proposal are in and the set of agreements was approved by the membership by a vote of 453 in favor (60.5%) and 295 opposed (39.5%).

The MSP will now finalize this agreement with the administration and the program will commence this fall.

The MSP worked very hard to reach this agreement and won on an array of issues including broadening the criteria for awards, expanding the number of individuals who could receive the awards over the life of the program, improving the anomaly award process, assuring that non-tenure system faculty get fair consideration for regular merit and remedying a long standing salary compression concern.

The MSP secured language that assures our ability to closely monitor exceptional merit awards in order to guarantee transparency of process.  In addition, the terms of this agreement expire June 30, 2016, and the success of this program will inform our approach to any subsequent agreement.

Over 700 votes were cast, an unprecedented level of participation in any MSP vote.  People are clearly passionate about this issue and many have serious concerns.  We hope that passion can be channeled into efforts to find productive changes for the university as we begin bargaining the next contract.

I personally want to thank the team that tirelessly engaged in these discussions.  Joe Levine, Holly Lawrence, Erica Scharrer and Maciej Ciesielski.  When you see them around campus, please acknowledge their fine work in improving this agreement.

Randy Phillis
MSP President
