STATE PROPOSES MSP RE-OPEN CONTRACT FURLOUGHS AND DELAY OF PAY INCREASES BEING CONSIDERED BY ALL HIGHER EDUCATION LOCALS IMPORTANT MEMBERSHIP MEETING THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, The contents of the administration “offer” for concessions are attached. The concessions include furloughs (see attached for furlough options) and raise delays worth roughly $10,000 in financial loss for the average MSP member, with many members losing considerably more. We have been told that these concessions are neither to prevent layoffs nor to relieve an immediate financial crisis. The MSP Executive Board met yesterday to discuss these issues. The board voted unanimously on two motions. The first rejected the administration’s offer outright. The second encouraged the MSP officers to continue to engage in discussions with the administration about alternatives. These alternatives could range from modified concessions to refusal to reopen our recently agreed contracts. Other state unions have been offered this package. None have accepted the package as presented, some have accepted modified variants, and some have refused to renegotiate at all. In fact the State Police Union is planning a protest against Deval Patrick for having asked them to renegotiate a contact they fought for years to achieve (they refused outright). YOUR INPUT ON THESE MATTERS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. PLEASE LET US KNOW WHETHER YOU WILL BE ATTENDING THE MEMBERSHIP MEETING BY EMAILING THE MSP AT MSP@EXTERNAL.UMASS.EDU FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED (please RSVP by end of business tomorrow, 2/5 to ensure your lunch), AND DISCUSSION WILL BE LIVELY.
